Happily Ever After: Getting Married in the USVI

A Caribbean Wedding - No Passports Required!

By Sarah Muñoz

It took high school sweethearts Linda and Kenneth a few decades to make it to the altar — or rather, to Mother Earth's sacred stretch of St. Thomas shoreline, where they finally became husband and wife. Life took them on different paths, yet when they finally reconnected, says Kenneth, "We didn't miss a beat."

Linda and Kenneth wanted to celebrate their nuptials intimately, with just the two of them present and on a destination that neither had visited before. St. Thomas beckoned, as did the Frenchman's Reef & Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort's ambience and wedding offerings. As they're both U.S. citizens, not needing a passport to get to the USVI added to the appeal.

"Everything was so great," says Linda. "I told Laura [the resort's event manager] what I envisioned and they did the rest. The ceremony took place on the beach, in a little cove." The waves were hitting the shore, the weather was fantastic, and the feel was sheer magic, she adds. "It felt like a movie," gushes Linda. "I could see '…And they lived happily ever after' as our own movie ending to the day."

The USVI sure has a flair for making magic happen, especially when it comes to love. From big-bang ceremonies to quiet one-on-one "I dos", the possibilities for a memorable destination wedding — and the honeymoon that follows — are seemingly endless here.

A destination wedding in the USVI can be made simply and affordably. Choose your location from our Loding and Dining directories - even certain attractions may be able to accommodate your wedding party. No passports are required and all the info you need about the marriage paperwork is below. After your wedding, share your photos and suggestions, here.

Marriage Requirements

Couples must fill out an application for a wedding license from the Territorial Court of the USVI to get married in St. Thomas, St. Croix or St. John.

In completing the form, couples must specify whether the ceremony will be performed by a Judge of the Court or a member of the clergy (you must make an appointment if a judge will officiate). Once the completed and authorized application has been received in the USVI, there is a required eight-day waiting period. If you will not be present in the Virgin Islands for eight (8) days before your marriage ceremony, you may be exempted from the posting requirement under the "special cases" exemption. If you need an exemption from the eight-day posting requirement, check the appropriate box on the application form and include a brief explanation of your reason for the request in the space provided.

Should either party be divorced, he or she must present a certified copy of the divorce decree or a notarized affidavit stating the date in which the divorce was granted.

There are no requirements for physical examination or blood tests.

Currently, there is a non-refundable application fee of $50, plus a marriage license fee of $50. Should the ceremony be performed by a Judge, there is an additional fee of $200 (no personal checks accepted and casual attire is not permitted before the Court).

Applications must be typewritten. You can type on this version of the form online. (You can't save the form, but print and mail it.)
